Electrician SEO budget in the UK: rethink the monthly retainer
UK electricians spending £500–£1,000 on SEO each month may get faster results from targeted leaflets in postcodes they already serve.

A polished van, good reviews, and a clear Google profile do not automatically fill the diary. Many electricians in Manchester, Leeds, or Bristol still pay £700+ a month for SEO while nearby streets have never had a leaflet with their number on it.
Electrical work is trust-heavy and local. The customer wants someone who can come today, not whoever wins a generic "electrician near me" auction.
SEO competes on the same searches
Every spark in your town targets similar keywords. Agencies deliver reports; you wait for movement. Meanwhile:
- Housing associations and landlords repeat contractors they already know
- Homeowners call the firm their neighbour used
- Letterbox offers land while the boiler is fine but the consumer unit is on their mind
Search captures intent. Print and local visibility create remembered intent when a fuse blows six months later.
Try one postcode cluster first
Choose a ward or suburb you can serve without traffic hell. Run 1,000 A5 leaflets with:
- Your business name, phone, and one clear offer
- Fixed prices or call-out clarity if that is how you already quote
- QR to book a safety check or quote
Split delivery across two weekends. Use a tracked link so you know if the Chorlton run beat Didsbury. Budget often under £400 all in, less than half a typical SEO month.
Keep SEO, but not as step one
Maintain Google Business Profile, collect reviews from jobs you win, and fix a slow site. Pay for SEO when you are converting the traffic you already get.
If you are unknown on the streets you drive through daily, local marketing without an SEO retainer may describe your next quarter better than another keyword map.
Measure jobs, not positions
Position six for "electrician Manchester" does not pay wages. Three rewires from a single estate does. Ask every new enquiry which postcode they came from for eight weeks. If most jobs cluster in three areas, your next leaflet drop should mirror that map, not a national keyword list.
Winter is a strong window for consumer unit upgrades and EV charger installs. A timed leaflet before cold weather hits can book February work while SEO reports still say "making progress."
